Tracking Languages for Firefox: what are your options?

Is Tracking Languages available on Firefox?

Not yet. Tracking Languages is currently a Chrome extension. It works on any Chromium-based browser — Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Opera — but not on Firefox.

Firefox uses a different extension API, which means a separate build is needed. It's on the roadmap but there's no release date yet.

Your options as a Firefox user

Option 1: Use a Chromium browser for immersion

The simplest fix. Install Chrome, Edge, or Brave and use it specifically for watching Netflix, YouTube, and Prime Video with Tracking Languages installed. Keep Firefox for everything else.

This takes 2 minutes to set up and gives you full automatic tracking — daily goals, streaks, weekly charts, and all-time hours per language across 38 languages.

Option 2: Use a separate Chrome profile

Create a dedicated Chrome profile for language immersion. Your YouTube recommendations will be 100% target language content, and all your tracking stays separate from your main browsing.

Option 3: Manual tracking

If you want to stay on Firefox, your options are manual:

• •Spreadsheets — log date, language, minutes, platform. Free but most people quit within two weeks.
• •LinguaTrackr — web-based manual tracker with trend lines and analytics.
• •Toggl — general timer app you can tag by language. Requires remembering to start and stop.

The problem with manual tracking is consistency. A 2023 JMIR study found manual tracking apps have a 50% dropout rate within 30 days.

Why auto-tracking matters

The FSI estimates you need 600+ hours of input for most European languages. At 30 minutes a day, that's over 3 years. Manual logging doesn't survive that timeline. Automatic tracking does — because there's nothing to remember.

The recommendation

If immersion is a serious part of your language learning, it's worth using a Chromium browser for your watching sessions. Install Tracking Languages, press play, and let it count every minute automatically.
