How to use YouTube for language immersion

Search in your target language

Don't search "learn French." Search in French. Type "recettes faciles" (easy recipes) or "actualités" (news). YouTube will start recommending French content.

Subscribe to native creators

Find creators who make content in your target language about topics you actually care about. Cooking, tech, gaming, travel — whatever you'd watch in English, find the equivalent.

Tip: Look for channels with 100k+ subscribers in your target language. They tend to have clearer audio and better production.

Start with subtitles, then drop them

YouTube auto-captions aren't perfect, but they're good enough to follow along. Use them as training wheels. After a few weeks, try watching without.

Use it as background input

You don't always need to sit and focus. Put on a YouTube video in your target language while cooking, cleaning, or commuting. Even passive listening builds familiarity with the sounds and rhythm of the language.

Let the algorithm work for you

The more you watch in your target language, the more YouTube recommends it. Within a week, your homepage will be full of content in your target language. That's the goal — make immersion the default.
